Fans of tennis are lucky to be alive in an era dominated by Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. For the three greatest players of one sport to be competing at the same time is an incredible treat. While Federer Vs Nadal has always been the key rivalry, when Federer played Djokovic in July 2019 at the Wimbledon final it highlighted the other great rivalry taking place and showed how the face of tennis has been changed forever thanks to these three great men.
The Wimbledon final of 2019 finished as a victory for Djokovic and allowed him to come a little closer to the two men who sit above him in the history books. The win gave Djokovic his 16th Grand Slam victory now only behind Nadal at 18 and Federer at 20. To consider that these three men hold the top records for Grand Slams while playing at the same time surely emphasizes their dominance of the sport. If Nadal and Djokovic never came on the scene then Federer would have so many he would never be caught. Yet they did. The three players continue to compete for the current titles and those in the history books.
Wimbledon 2019 was another one for the records as it was the longest final in the history of Wimbledon since 1870, longer than the Nadal Vs Federer epic of 2008 by nine minutes. To think that Federer was involved in both is a testament to a man that has an incredibly successful and consistent career.
The final was also the first time in 71 years for a player to take home the trophy from the All England Club facing match points against him. The epic battle was a fantastic moment in sporting history but a symbol of the battle that is taking place in tennis at the moment. Three great players continue to change the sport forever. If only one of them played today they may hold all the records or they may never have reached such great heights. The competition currently witnessed in tennis is pushing each player and the sport further and further. The real winners, though, are the fans.
